Gym facilities are shifting away from staffed front desks toward 24/7 unattended models to eliminate off-hours labor overhead. Both HybridAF and Kisi automate this shift by replacing physical entry methods with digital credentials, but they operate on fundamentally different business models.
At a glance #
How Kisi and HybridAF compare #
The scope of each system #
HybridAF is built around helping independent gyms offer 24/7 unattended access without adding staff. Their entire platform is focused, simple, and priced as an all-included subscription. As a gym owner who wants exactly that and nothing more, HybridAF is a clean solution.
Kisi's fitness platform, KisiFit, targets a larger spectrum, namely it looks at how operators can run a modern fitness facility (that ties into access, security, bookings, visitor management, intercom) from one single platform. 24/7 unattended access is a core feature, but KisiFit extends into managing the full member journey:
- who gets in and when
- how spaces and equipment get booked
- how visitors are handled
- how the facility is secured against tailgating and unauthorized entry.
For gym owners who want more than just a door opener, that breadth is the value.
Mobile credentials and entry options #
HybridAF uses app-based mobile entry, so members download the HybridAF app and unlock the door from their phone. It's straightforward and works on iOS and Android. Kisi offers a broader range of credential options: the Kisi mobile app, Apple Wallet, Apple Watch, MotionSense hands-free entry (the door opens when a member approaches), key cards, fobs, and QR codes.
Bookings #
This is one of Kisi's clearest advantages over HybridAF for gyms that have bookable spaces (we’re talking equipment bays, private training rooms, recovery suites, spa areas, etc). Kisi bookings is a native feature that lets members view availability, make reservations, and pay for day passes or space reservations. Things like visual floor plans, calendar invites, and flexible reservation rules are also included. Access to a booked space is automatically granted for the reservation window and revoked when it ends. HybridAF does not offer a native bookings feature. Gyms that need booking alongside access control would need to source that separately.
Tailgating detection #
Both platforms offer tailgating detection but through different camera integrations. Kisi integrates with companies like Vivotek, Cisco Meraki and Rhombus cameras for tailgating alerts, meaning when someone follows a member through the door without authenticating, staff receive a real-time alert. Kisi has also introduced tailgating follow-up emails, giving gym operators a documented record of incidents they can act on.
HybridAF partners with Camio for tailgating detection, so when unauthorized entry is detected, it's logged and staff are notified, with the option to charge a guest fee or block access. Both approaches achieve the same core outcome and the practical difference is really down to which camera systems you already have or plan to use.
Intercom and visitor access #
Kisi has Intercom Pro, which is a video intercom system that allows visitors to call staff or members from the door, with the call received in the app. For gyms with delivery access, guest entry, or package rooms, this adds a layer of managed visitor access beyond what member credentials alone provide. HybridAF does not offer an intercom solution. Visitor and guest access is handled through guest passes within the app, but there's no video intercom capability.
Hardware and what's included #
HybridAF includes hardware, installation, software updates, and ongoing hardware service in the subscription, so there's nothing to purchase separately. This simplicity is appealing for operators who want a known, all-in monthly cost.
Kisi's hardware (so the Controller Pro 2, Reader Pro, and Terminal Pro) is purchased separately from the software subscription. Hardware comes with a 5-year warranty, and OTA firmware updates are included. If the facility in question has compatible locks or Wiegand wiring, Kisi's Controller Pro 2 can often connect to existing infrastructure without full hardware replacement. The upfront hardware cost is higher, but the modular model means you pay for what you need.
The HybridAF network #
HybridAF has one genuine feature Kisi doesn't offer: the HybridAF member network. Members at any HybridAF gym can search and access 750+ partner gyms worldwide at discounted drop-in rates through the app. This is a meaningful member benefit with no added work for the operator.
Kisi doesn't have an equivalent member network. For multi-location fitness franchises, Kisi handles cross-location access natively (a.k.a. a member's credentials can unlock any club in the network based on their membership tier) but there's no consumer-facing network of partner gyms the way HybridAF has built.
Insurance approval #
HybridAF has been specifically reviewed and approved by Affiliate Guard, which is one of the largest fitness industry insurers, and leading fitness carriers for unattended gym access. If you're nervous about insurance implications of running 24/7 without staff, HybridAF's explicit insurance approval is a practical reassurance. Kisi does not have a specific Affiliate Guard approval or equivalent fitness insurance certification for now.
Gym management integrations #
Both platforms integrate with major gym management software, and there's significant overlap. Mindbody and Wodify are on both lists, for example. HybridAF covers Zen Planner, Mariana Tek, Pike13, RxGym, Streamfit, Xplor Triib, FitHive, WODboard, and PushPress. Kisi covers ABC Glofox, Exercise.com, ABC Ignite, TeamUp, Magicline, bsport, and Gymflow alongside shared platforms.
The practical difference in both instances is what the integration does. Mainly, both sync membership status to gate access (example: when a membership lapses, access is revoked). Kisi's integrations additionally supports:
- class-reservation-based access windows (access is granted only during a member's booked class)
- membership tier enforcement (premium members access all locations, basic members stay limited)
- real-time attendance data syncing back to the management platform.
Which type of fitness facility is each suited for? #
Independent gyms and CrossFit boxes #
HybridAF is built for exactly this operator. A CrossFit box or independent gym that wants to go 24/7, keep setup simple, get insurance-approved access, and integrate with Wodify or Zen Planner will find HybridAF's all-included model with a fast install timeline the most frictionless path to being live.
Kisi is also a strong option here, particularly for gyms that want Apple Wallet or hands-free entry, need bookings alongside access, or already use Mindbody, Glofox, or Exercise.com. The higher upfront hardware cost is the main consideration for smaller operators on tighter budgets.
Boutique studios with bookable spaces #
Kisi has a meaningful advantage here. Studios with private training rooms, equipment bays, recovery suites, or rentable turf areas can use Kisi Bookings to manage reservations and payments in the same platform as access control. HybridAF doesn't have a native bookings feature, which means a separate tool for space management.
Fitness franchises and multi-location operators #
Kisi is the stronger choice at scale. Multi-location management, centralized dashboards, membership tier enforcement across clubs, and integration with enterprise fitness software like ABC Ignite and Exercise.com are built for franchise operators managing many locations. HybridAF serves multi-gym operators through its partner network model but is primarily positioned for single-location independent gyms rather than franchise infrastructure.
Gyms that frequently host visitors, events, or drop-ins #
Kisi's Intercom Pro, visitor management, and QR-based day pass entry give gyms better tools for managing non-member access like event attendees, guests, or drop-ins. HybridAF covers guest passes but doesn't have an intercom or structured visitor management workflow.
Gym members who travel frequently #
HybridAF's gym network is the strongest option for member travel. Being able to drop in at 750+ partner gyms through the same app is a tangible member benefit that Kisi doesn't match. For gym owners whose members frequently travel and want that network perk as a retention tool, this is a genuine HybridAF differentiator.
